In order to cultivate healthy use of the Internet among students, the “Healthy Use of Internet Support Service” was especially created and the “Healthy Net Slogan Competition” was held in October 2013. The competition had an overwhelming response and received more than 3,600 contest entries.
In addition, to coincide with the 20th anniversary of International Families’ Day, the “Home with App Gen” sharing session and the “Healthy Net Slogan Competition” award presentation ceremony were held on March 8, 2014, fostering awareness among the public on how internet culture affects youth and family relationships. On the same day that the award was presented to the winner of the slogan competition, there were also sharing sessions by parents and youth. Parents shared on how to set an example for their children by reducing the time they spend on the internet themselves. Youth shared their experience of how finding interests and goals lessened the control that online games had over them. We feel privileged to have had Dr. Wong Yu Cheung of the Department of Social Work at the Chinese University of Hong Kong as a guest speaker to discuss the impact of youth online culture on the family unit.
